Advanced Excel

This is a series of short presentations about using Excel to solve some interesting data challenges.  Each one comes with a working Excel file that shows some advanced techniques.  We hope this is of interest.  The videos we have are:

  1. Voting
  2. Data Selection
  3. Data Slicing
    1. Data Slicing Theory
  4. Password Distribution

Tell us if there is some other example you want to see covered.

Excel #1 – Voting

This example controls voting in an election.  You can obtain this spreadsheet from Voting Spreadsheet (it has had to be zipped because this web host won’t allow xlsm files).

Excel #2 – Selecting from a List

This second example extracts a short list of matching items from a long list.  The full spreadsheet can be downloaded from Picker.

Excel #3 – Exploring invoice data

This third example holds a set of invoices and lets the user explore how they relate to each other.  The example spreadsheet can be downloaded from projects (once again it has to zipped so the web site can accept it).

Excel #3a – The theory

This presentation provides a detailed look at the general pattern behind example #3.

Excel #4 – Partial Passwords

If you have an essential system that is managed by an individual what if that person becomes unavailable?  This spreadsheet (password) solves that issue, it generates a random password and creates a set of messages to share parts of the password with some trusted people.  No two of the partial passwords is enough to reveal the whole thing but any three will.
